Halloween Special: A Preview of SPIRIT, One of the Current Projects I'm Working On
NYCC was a few weeks ago, and I can't help but show of one of the projects I was pitching at the largest comic event in the world
There is always something about new artwork and seeing the stuff you wrote in a script come to life.
I wish I could say I was good about keeping it ‘classified,’ but honestly, that’s no fun and I have basically no discipline when it comes to not releasing anything. I’ve got to show off at least something, right? Thank Odin there are no contracts attached…yet.
So, I’m currently fresh off not only the first convention I’ve been to since 2018 but also the first NYCC too.
I was on a good 4 or 5-year streak of NYCCs prior, so to be back at one of, if not the largest comic events in the world, to do the ‘professional’ thing once again was a nice shot to the soul of feel good.
The way people describe the energy of NYC, is how I’ve always felt about NYCC, minus the con-crud and crowds.
I’ve always been able to accomplish years worth of career work in a single event. Now, while I didn’t attend all 4 days, the one day was a nice start to getting back on this horse and I look forward to sharing my experience in a later piece.
For now, let’s talk about one of the pitches.
SPIRIT is what I would describe as Mike Mignola’s B.P.R.D. meets Atsushi Ohkubo’s SOUL EATER. It’s an idea that hails all the way back to late high school, and early college days that over the past 3 years went through a complete overall from the original iterations birthed almost a decade ago.
The amount of cringe I feel looking back on the early script, if we can even call it that, isn’t even the kind of embarrassment I’m comfortable sharing.
Even trying to do the ‘positive’ thing and profess, it may be bad but look how far you come!
Nah, it sucked and I don’t like revisiting it.
However, now, with some experience under my belt, and more time to practice, tweak, fine-tune, edit, and craft this project, it’s no longer in the suck category and in the, if I’m being honest, my bias aside, pretty, pretty good.
While I don’t shy from sharing artwork, I do shy from giving away the idea itself until some signatures have been applied to contracts or Kickstarters are live.
Details, ideas, those, those I will keep close to the chest.
For now, I cannot be more proud of the pitch package our team put together and created. Every piece of this puzzle blew me away and I could not be more excited, more satisfied to my core, about how it’s come together and looks.
Without further ado, check out some pages from one (that’s right, just one) of the pitches I took with me to NYCC to shop around. Enjoy.

Unfortunately, the cliffhanger that ties this entire pitch together is for members only. Those on the free side, sorry.
